Laura is a new kind of progressive — deeply committed to advancing LGBTQIA+ rights, protecting women’s and immigrant rights, and building a more just and inclusive community. At the same time, she knows that real progress requires smart, fiscally responsible leadership that ensures long-term impact and sustainability.

A passionate advocate for small businesses and a devoted community leader, Laura believes local entrepreneurs are the backbone of a strong, thriving ward. Through her leadership, she champions collaboration, innovative thinking, and practical solutions that foster both social equity and economic growth.

Laura Yepez is a first-generation Mexican-American, born and raised in the southwest suburbs of Chicago in a proud union household. Her father’s IBEW job helped lift the family into the middle class and instilled in her a deep appreciation for hard work and community.

After attending public schools, Laura earned her degree in Urban Studies from Brown University, where she served as a minority peer counselor and interned in Washington, DC, supporting under-resourced students through the Higher Achievement Program.

Laura began her career as a legislative aide in the Illinois House of Representatives, then transitioned into media and advertising. She co-owned two small businesses in the 1st Ward and still operates the Wicker Park Inn, a longtime neighborhood staple. Currently, she serves as Vice President of People Operations at a fully remote global tech company, where she leads HR, talent development, and organizational strategy.

A proud mom of a blended family of four teens, Laura is also deeply involved in local civic life — serving on chambers of commerce, school councils, and community organizations. In 2023, she was selected for the Illinois Women’s Institute for Leadership Training Academy, which prepares pro-choice Democratic women for elected office.

In April 2024, Laura was elected 1st Ward Democratic Committeewoman. She founded the 1st Ward Democrats to energize civic participation and support candidates who align with the ward’s values — with a focus on progressive ideals, strong public education, public safety, and smart fiscal leadership.
